Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of Social Services or designate, the Recreation Coordinator will be responsible for the planning and organizing of community programming and special events, as well as making recommendations regarding short- and long-term budget planning for equipment, events, and facilities. The Recreation Coordinator will be required to work Monday through Friday and incorporate two (2) evenings per week.

Skills and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications. The list of qualifications will be used to develop a screening tool. It isthe responsibility of the candidate to communicate their expertise and experience in identified areas.

  • A College Diploma in Recreation or Social Services is preferred;
  • Clear understanding of policies and procedures that outline behaviours to promote client safety;
  • First Aid & CPR Certificate;
  • Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License;
  • Clean Criminal Reference Check & Vulnerable Persons Sector Check;
  • Ability to be active for indoor and outdoor recreation activities;
  • Working with youth of all ages in the community;

Summary of Duties & Responsibilities:
Recreation Programming

  • Develop recreational facilities and programs for all age groups, to improve general fitness levels and the quality of life on the reserve.
  • Involve community members in the implementation of, and participation in, recreational programming.
  • To develop leadership potential in community members and emphasize sportsmanlike conduct.
  • To maintain positive relations with surrounding First Nations, municipalities, and agencies.
  • To motivate and coordinate the functions of community volunteers, coaches, referees, and participants.
  • Ensure that community members are well informed of all recreational activities; encourage constructive feedback from members.
  • Pursue personal professional development by attending relevant training workshops, seminars and meetings when indicated.
  • To work in conjunction with the Social and Health Services in promoting general health, through the planning and implementing of programs and events.
  • Develop appropriate recreational policies and procedures, as directed.
  • Monitor use of recreation equipment and facilities; develop and maintain a monthly inventory system.
  • Research and develop proposals for the purpose of obtaining funding.
  • Facilitate the establishment and development of a working Recreation Committee.
  • Supervision of recreational programs and youth workers (scheduling, hiring, discipline.)
  • Coordination of special events, such as, Children’s Christmas Party, Indigenous Peoples Day and Winter Carnival.
  • Ensuring the facilities are clean and organized and upkeep is maintained.
  • Organize and facilitate weekly sports nights, Afterschool clubs, girls groups, volleyball socials, winter carnivals, winter sports, baseball league, sport camps in the summer, baseball outings/ tournaments, youth led events, special outings
  • Encourage community members to volunteer, participate in more special events, such as winter carnival, girls groups special guests, aboriginal days, day camp, Christmas children’s party, parental coaching for baseball, and youth summer tournaments.
  • Seek to involve departments to help support any special programming, summer department sport challenge.
  • Organize annual volunteer appreciation event
  • Develop and distribute monthly calendars for recreation programs
  • Regularly attend Social Services staff meetings
  • Monitor sports equipment weekly and/or after each use
