Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Wildlife Coordinator, the Wildlife Technician will provide technical assistance and support to the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg wildlife management section. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the BN Wildlife Biologist expert and Wildlife Coordinator to develop wildlife management policies and strategies as it applies to the management of wildlife in the Biigtigong territory as well as the technical on-the-ground work required to fulfill the mandate of the wildlife management direction from Biigtigong Nishnaabeg.The Wildlife Technician will be located at the Sustainable Development office and will be under the supervision of the Wildlife Coordinator

Summary of Duties/Requirements:

  • Knowledge of provincial and federal wildlife management policies and programs, including species at risk management and hunting, trapping, and fishing regimes;
  • Implement wildlife strategies and actions plans in collaboration with the Wildlife Coordinator and the BN Wildlife Biologist expert;
  • Conduct habitat and site assessment within Biigtigong Territory as well as the Lake Superior Coastal area;
  • Conduct yearly predator assessments and tracking of ice cover;
  • Placing, checking, and retrieving wildlife monitoring cameras;
  • Participate in field surveys and wildlife monitoring activities including aerial surveys;
  • Attend and participate with the Wildlife Management team on the Biigtigong Wildlife committee and external Caribou Council activities;
  • Participate and attend meetings with external industry, ministries and government agencies about wildlife management policies and procedures;
  • Assist in the development of wildlife management education and research for BN members and staff;
  • Responsible for developing, inputting, and tracking data as well as maintaining filing system of internal wildlife documents within the department;
  • Other duties as related.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications. The list of qualifications will be used to develop a screening tool. It is the responsibility of the candidate to communicate their expertise and experience in identified areas.

  • Must have post-secondary diploma/certificate in environmental sciences or wildlife biology;
  • Minimum two years-experience working in field monitoring within the wildlife field;
  • Must possess a valid Class G license and access to reliable vehicle, if required;
  • Standard First Aid and CPR training;
  • Capable of working in low altitude aircraft (twin otter, beaver, and helicopter);
  • Proven experience working in lab and field operations and using field equipment;
  • Possess problem-solving skills to troubleshoot operational field activities;
  • Experience working with computers and computer software such as word processing, spreadsheets and data entry;
  • Proven ability to work as a team member with minimal supervision and if required, work remotely;
  • Ability to operate drone technology for field assessments. Drone certification is an asset;
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral);
  • Ability to undertake fieldwork in inclement weather including winter conditions, lifting, and carrying heavy objects (field gear), and hiking long distances over difficult terrain.
